EMDR FOR TRAUMA AND PTSD

EMDR therapy can help you process traumatic or distressing experiences that continue to affect you today. It is a NICE-recommended treatment for PTSD. Our EMDR therapists offer face-to-face appointments in Blaby, Leicester, and online therapy across the UK.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a structured psychological therapy that can help people process traumatic or distressing memories. During EMDR, you briefly focus on parts of a memory while using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping or sounds.

What Can EMDR Therapy Help With?

EMDR FOR PTSD, TRAUMA AND DISTRESSING PAST EXPERIENCES

EMDR is best known as a treatment for PTSD and trauma-related symptoms. It may also help when difficult past experiences are linked to anxiety, phobias, grief, low self-confidence or distressing memories that still feel present. You do not need a PTSD diagnosis to be considered for EMDR. Whether it is suitable will depend on your needs and assessment.

Common Questions About EMDR Therapy

Please reach us at enquiries@resilientmindtherapies.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a well researched therapy used to help people process difficult or distressing experiences.

During EMDR, you are guided to briefly focus on a memory while also following a set of eye movements or other gentle side to side stimulation. This helps your brain process the memory in a different way.

Over time, the memory usually becomes less intense. It may still be there, but it no longer feels as upsetting or overwhelming as it once did.

EMDR is often used for trauma, anxiety, and other difficulties where past experiences are still having an impact in the present.

Yes, EMDR is not only used for PTSD. It can help with a range of difficulties where past experiences still affect how you feel now. This includes anxiety, panic, phobias, grief, low self confidence, and the impact of difficult relationships or life events. You do not need a diagnosis to benefit from EMDR. What matters is how these experiences are affecting your day to day life. At the start of therapy, we will take time to understand your situation and decide together whether EMDR is the right approach for you.

Traumatic memories can sometimes feel vivid and connected with strong emotional or physical reactions. A smell, sound, place or situation may bring back the feelings linked to what happened, even many years later. EMDR focuses on the memory and the responses connected with it. Over time, the memory may feel less distressing and more clearly connected with the past rather than the present

No, you do not have to go into lots of detail about what happened. EMDR focuses on how the memory is held in your mind, rather than asking you to talk through every part of it. You may share a brief outline, but you do not need to describe the experience in full. Many people find this makes EMDR easier to engage with, especially if talking about the past feels difficult.

You stay in control throughout the process, and we only go at a pace that feels manageable for you.

EMDR works differently from many forms of talking therapy. Rather than relying mainly on discussing or analysing an experience, it uses a structured process that focuses on distressing memories, associated beliefs and the emotional or physical responses connected with them. Some people consider EMDR when previous therapy has helped them understand what happened, but the memories or reactions still feel intense.

There is no set number of sessions. It depends on your situation and what you want support with. Some people need a short course of EMDR to work through a specific experience. Others may need longer, especially if difficulties have built up over time or started earlier in life. We will review progress as we go and adjust the plan if needed. The focus is on helping you move forward, rather than sticking to a fixed number of sessions.

Yes. EMDR can be provided online using secure video sessions. Eye movements, tapping and other forms of bilateral stimulation can be adapted for online therapy. Many people value attending from their own home. Online EMDR will not be suitable for every person or situation, so we will consider your needs and circumstances before deciding whether online or face-to-face therapy is most appropriate.

You can book a free 15-minute consultation to get started. This is a no-pressure conversation where you can talk through what you are experiencing, ask any questions about EMDR therapy, and get a sense of whether this feels like the right fit before committing to anything. There is no obligation and no expectation. It is simply a chance to find out whether we are the right people to help.

EMDR can be helpful for many people, but it is not always the right approach straight away. Before beginning EMDR, we will spend time understanding your difficulties, current circumstances and goals. If another approach would be more suitable, this will be discussed with you during assessment.

Is EMDR Therapy Right for Me?

WHEN A PAST EXPERIENCE IS STILL AFFECTING YOU NOW

EMDR may be worth considering when something from the past continues to affect your life today.

You may notice that memories still feel vivid or upsetting. You might avoid places, conversations or situations that remind you of what happened. You may feel constantly on edge, experience strong emotional or physical reactions, or find that part of you still responds as though the experience is happening now.

Some people consider EMDR after talking therapy has helped them understand what happened, but the memories or reactions still feel intense. Others seek EMDR because they do not want to describe every detail of their experience repeatedly.

EMDR is not automatically the right treatment for everyone. Before beginning memory processing, we will take time to understand your current difficulties, circumstances and goals. We will also consider whether you feel able to manage distress between sessions and whether any preparation or stabilisation work is needed first.

If another approach would be more appropriate, we will discuss this with you during your assessment.
